Maintaining Fabric Window Treatments

Custom window treatments are an investment in your home's value and aesthetic appeal. As with any investment, you want to maintain your window coverings, so they continue performing at their maximum capacity for years to come. The team at Smart PNW is sharing some easy ways to keep your shades and drapes looking their best.

Dust Regularly

It’s easier to remove dust and dirt before the grime can build up. Use your vacuum hose attachment on low suction to give your fabric shades or drapes a quick once-over every week. If your home has hard window treatments, make sure you dust those regularly, as well.

Cleaning

Spot cleaning can work wonders on minor stains or smudges, but only if you act quickly. Use a mild detergent with warm water, and test an inconspicuous area before tackling the stain. If the fabric of your drapery is washable, use gentle detergent and the delicate cycle on your washing machine. You can place your drapes in a large garment for extra safety before putting them in the wash. When it’s time to dry, air drying is the best way to prevent shrinkage and help your shades keep their shape. If you have to stick them in the dryer, use the lowest heat setting.

Remove Wrinkles

Wrinkles are unsightly and can also cause damage to your shades if left unattended for too long. Lowering your shade and using a steamer is the most convenient way to remove wrinkles, but ironing with low heat is also an option. If you’re ironing, keep the iron moving to prevent scorch marks.

Storing

If you’re moving or simply switching out your window treatments for a new season, it’s important to store them properly. Keep your fabric window coverings as flat as possible in a cool, dry area. A dry environment is vital when storing soft window treatments to prevent mildew on your shades.

Don’t Forget the Windows

Cleaning your windows regularly will help prevent the transfer of any dirt or oil from your fingers to your shades. A clean pane of glass makes the perfect backdrop for gorgeous custom drapery. If possible, keep your windows and coverings away from young children and pets. This will help to keep both of them looking fresh for longer.

Ventilation

We mentioned how essential it is to store fabric window treatments in a dry spot, but your shades also need ventilation while hanging in your home. This is especially true if you have classic Roman shades in your bathroom or kitchen where humidity is prevalent. You want to prevent prolonged moisture on any fabric, including cellular and sheer shades.
