Choosing Window Treatments for Different Rooms in Your Home

Your window treatments are almost as important as your windows themselves. They improve the aesthetic appeal of a room and provide privacy and protection from the sun. Much like you have different outfits for different events, different rooms in your home have differing requirements for window treatments. We’ve put together some ideas to help you choose window treatments for every room in your home.

Bedrooms

In rooms where privacy and light control are at a premium, you want a window treatment that will give you maximum control over both. Opaque styles, like Roman shades, are an excellent choice. Cellular shades from Hunter Douglas with the LightLock™ feature have specialized channels that trap significantly more light than traditional cellular shades.

Kitchen

You likely spend a large amount of time in your kitchen, so window coverings that are easy to operate and convenient to keep clean are a must. Faux wood shutters are an excellent option. They are easy to open and close, and the tiltable louvers allow you to control the amount of both light and privacy. Faux wood is also very easy to maintain as it won’t absorb grease or cooking odors and won’t be damaged by moisture. Fabric options are another reasonable choice. While they can absorb odors and oil, they can also be laundered.

Living Areas

Your living and sitting rooms are the place in your home where you relax and entertain guests, so you want these rooms to look their best. Any style of window treatment, or a combination of two, is fine so long as the result enhances the aesthetics of the room. Sheer shadings, like Silhouette® Window Shadings, are elegant and stylish but won’t draw so much attention as to detract from the rest of the room. Woven wood shades are an easy way to bring a bit of the outdoors inside, and look great with other earthy, organic tones.

Bathrooms

You need complete privacy in your bathroom, but you also need a window covering that can stand up to high levels of heat and humidity. Faux wood or aluminum blinds are a good choice for bathrooms. The slats can be closed completely when privacy is needed and tilted open for natural light and ventilation. Faux wood shutters are another way to go, as they are impervious to moisture, and offer complete privacy when the louvers are fully closed. When privacy isn’t needed, the shutters can be opened all the way for light, ventilation, and an unobscured view.
