Tips for Storing Window Treatments

There will come a time when you want to switch out your current window treatments with something new. You can donate your old window coverings or store them for later use. If you’re going to keep them, you’ll want to know these handy tips for proper cleaning and storage.

Storing window treatments, cleaning window treatments, how to store window treatments near Tacoma, Washington (WA).
  1. Clean window coverings properly before storage. Regardless of what type of window treatments you have, you will want to clean them before storing them. Any marks or stains will be significantly harder to remove after being placed in storage. Curtains and drapes should be dry cleaned. You can clean roller blinds by wiping the surface with a damp cloth, and you can vacuum fabric shades with a low suction setting. The slats of rigid blinds and shutters can be cleaned using a soft cloth. For stubborn marks or stains, brush gently with an old, soft toothbrush.
  2. Store your window treatments according to the material. When storing drapes or curtains, resist the urge to fold them to make the most of your storage space. Folding fabric can cause creases that can be very difficult to remove. Instead, roll your curtains up like a rug to avoid creasing. Roller and solar shades should be rolled up and placed into a tube. A cardboard shipping tube will work great. Ensure the shades don’t rub against any hard surface to prevent color damage. You should store wood, faux wood, and aluminum blinds in a closed position with the slats kept straight. Shutters can be stored like any other piece of furniture. Just make sure no other items are placed on top of them.
  3. Always store fabric window coverings away from direct sunlight. Fabric shades should be stored in a cool, dark place such as an attic or cabinet. Exposure to heat, humidity, or UV rays can cause discoloration and place unnecessary wear on the fabric.
  4. Check on your window treatments at least once a year to ensure they are still in good condition and free of mold and other damage.
  5. Use acid-free packaging whenever possible. Cardboard boxes used for storage may contain acidic residue. Look for cardboard and paper labeled “acid-free.” Regular cardboard boxes can cause window treatments, especially white ones, to yellow.
  6. Place a label with the date and contents on every container used for storage. This will make locating your curtains easier in the future and prevent confusion if you’re storing several window treatments in similar boxes.

Other Storage Tips

  • Store window treatments in a room that is properly ventilated to help prevent mold.
  • Avoid lubricating any mechanisms just before storage. Excess lubricant will damage the material.
  • Don’t store curtains or shades with any metal pieces, as they can rub against the fabric and cause damage.
